Regular indoor wiring, like NM (Romex), is not suitable for outdoor use because it can absorb moisture and deteriorate quickly.
Make sure all kabel and connectors are UL-listed for direct burial or wet locations, as required in the National Electrical Code (NEC).
Bury Wiring at the Proper Depth
To protect your wires from lawn mowers, gardening tools, and freezing ground, bury your outdoor lighting cable at the recommended depth. NEC guidelines suggest a minimum of 18 inches for direct burial cable, but local Utah codes or conditions could require more depending on the location and type of cable.
In shallow areas, conduit can be installed to provide extra protection against physical damage and water intrusion.
Use GFCI Protection
While our focus is on wiring longevity, the NEC requires that receptacles powering outdoor lighting circuits have ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection. This safeguards you and your equipment against electrical faults caused by moisture or damaged wiring.
Seal Connections Properly
Connections are the most vulnerable spots to moisture entry. Use weatherproof junction boxes and wire connectors rated for outdoor use. Apply silicone or appropriate sealants around box covers and cable entries to keep water out.
Doing this preserves the integrity of the wiring and fixtures, minimizing corrosion and electrical shorts.

Invest in outdoor-rated lighting fixtures designed to withstand UV rays, moisture, and temperature swings typical of Utah’s mountain environment. Coupling quality fixtures with proper wiring creates a system that endures.
